Asano Taiko, located in Matto, Ishikawa Prefecture, is one of the major taiko manufacturers in Japan. Since its founding in 1609, the company has been making a wide range of taiko drums, with all processes from the felling of the trees to the finishing touches done by hand.
Asano Taiko was founded by taiko maker Saemongoro Asano in 1609 and has a mind-boggling history of 400 years in the trade. Saemongoro was summoned from Harima (today’s Hyogo Prefecture) by the Kaga clan and founded Asano Taiko in Fukutomi, Ishikawa Village (today’s Fukudome in Hakusan City).
Asano Taiko has been manufacturing taiko drums as well as promoting taiko culture by establishing such facilities as the “Taiko no Sato Shiryokan” museum, which exhibits percussion instruments from around the world, the taiko practice hall “Shinkyokan” and “Asano-EX“, a space for culture and art-related events, in addition to holding taiko classes for adults and children and publishing a newsletter about taiko.
In 1998, Asano Taiko completed the world’s largest taiko, the culmination of 400 years of skill and tradition. To pass on the taiko sound to the future – the sound that has excited the hearts of those to hear it from ancient times – Asano Taiko continues to make wadaiko with all their heart.
