Taiko Class Descriptions

No prior taiko experience necessary!
You’ve seen taiko – now it’s your turn! This workshop is a wonderful entry point to feel firsthand the power of taiko. A brief history is presented alongside fun taiko exercises that introduce basic form (kata) voice (kiai), oral tradition (kuchi shouga), and your first taiko song. No previous taiko experience necessary, but students must be 12 years of age and older, and capable of fairly rigorous physical activity.

PREREQUISITE: Attend one Intro to Taiko workshop
This class is the perfect entry for those who are starting their first taiko experience, and a great way to brush up on those taiko skills for those who may have played a little before. Basic taiko form, rhythm, movement, and voice will be introduced. Build a strong foundation as you grow into the art form of taiko! No refunds or class credit once enrolled.

DRILLS & SKILLS $12 single class, unlimited monthly or class pass
Learn the drills, get the skills. Focusing on the powerful unity of playing together, this class welcomes all levels! Exercises will be practiced over and over again in order for the taiko playing to transfer from the “thinking” into the “feeling.” The repetition of simple and lively taiko exercises will obtain a truly physical understanding on the drum. Rock out to the power of the beat!

Unlock the possibilities! Learning a song is a great way to deepen your taiko understanding and gain new perspectives of the art form. Each class will focus on one song within UNIT SOUZOU’s repertoire introducing various taiko skills and techniques while encouraging camaraderie as a kumi-daiko ensemble.

PERFORMANCE unlimited monthly
Take your taiko playing to the next level. Understand the difference between playing and performing taiko! In this class, students form a special bond with each other to express and play as an ensemble. Through learning taiko songs, repertoire and stage basics, you can apply all your taiko skills within a special community of dedicated and fun-loving taiko players. Students will also be expected to join UNIT SOUZOU for selected, local community performances bringing the power and beauty of taiko to the wider public.
